You sort of appreciate it more in retrospect than in the moment. It"s almost like a poem, in a way. It has a consistently unconventional approach and subverts almost all the genres it could be placed in. It also has a fantastic, unique score and some amazing, relatively nuanced performances. Despite all this, the affair never really gets out of second gear. It has a strange pace which makes it feel longer than it is, too. It"s always engaging but it isn"t exactly gripping. It has its ups and downs, but it sort of just stays in one lane. It"s an entertaining experience overall, though. It seems to be getting a bit of backlash because of its fictional nature but I don"t think this is exactly valid because, to its credit, the piece tells you it isn"t "true" right at the start. Its title is ironic. I believe this is its most interesting aspect. It isn"t just another inevitably fictionalised account of a long gone historical figure. Instead, it"s a story not about Ned Kelly, but about the idea of Ned Kelly. 6/10.
